Hidden Everyday Japan

Buying things in Japan is easy once you know a few patterns.
This page is a simple guide to convenience stores and drugstores—what to say, what to tap, and what to expect at checkout.

Convenience store basics

  • Hot snacks: point at the item photo and say:
    “This one, please.” / 「これ、ください」
  • Warming food:
“Could you heat it up?” / 「温めてください」

Payment tips

Most places accept cash, credit cards, and IC cards (Suica/PASMO). If the reader asks “bag?” you can say:
“Yes, please.” / 「お願いします」

Quick label hints

  • “Limited” / 期間限定 = limited time
  • 辛い = spicy
  • 甘い = sweet

I’ll keep expanding this page with real examples as I test more products.
